How to Convert Comic Books (CBR & CBZ) to PDF or EPUB

You have a comic, manga chapter or graphic novel saved as a .cbr or .cbz file, and it will not open. Your phone stares back blankly, your e-reader ignores it, and the office laptop has no idea what to do with it. The fix is simple: convert it to a format everything understands - PDF for universal viewing and printing, or EPUB for a proper e-reader library entry.

This guide explains what CBR and CBZ actually are, which output format to pick, and how to convert them in seconds without installing WinRAR, Calibre or any comic reader.

What are CBR and CBZ files?

Here is the thing most people do not realise: a comic book file is not a special format at all. It is just an archive of image files - one picture per page - named so they sort in reading order. A comic reader opens the archive and flips through the images.

  • CBZ (Comic Book ZIP) is a plain ZIP archive of page images. It is open, simple, and the most common digital comic format.
  • CBR (Comic Book RAR) is the same idea, but compressed with proprietary RAR instead of ZIP. RAR support is shrinking across software, which is why CBR is so often converted.

Because they are just images, comics do not contain selectable text or reflowable content - which matters when choosing your output format.

PDF or EPUB - which should you choose?

Both keep your pages as images in the correct order. The difference is how you want to read them:

  • Convert to PDF if you want a fixed page layout that opens on literally any device, is easy to email, and prints correctly. Best for reading on a laptop or tablet and for printing.
  • Convert to EPUB if you want the comic to appear in an e-reader library (Apple Books, Google Play Books, Kobo, most mobile reader apps) with a cover thumbnail and a shelf entry, sitting alongside your other books.

Convert your comic in 3 steps

Pick the converter for your file and target format:

  1. Open the converter for your file type and desired output (links above).
  2. Upload your comic - drag and drop or click to browse. Files up to 250 MB are supported.
  3. Download the result - conversion takes a few seconds, and the pages arrive in their original reading order.

No sign-up. No software to install. Your file is processed in memory and deleted the instant your download is ready.

What happens during the conversion?

For a CBZ, the pages are read straight out of the ZIP. For a CBR, the proprietary RAR archive is unpacked with an open-source extractor inside a hardened, network-isolated sandbox - the same pipeline that powers our RAR to ZIP tool, complete with decompression-bomb and unsafe-path protections.

The page images are then assembled - in their original file-name order - into your chosen PDF or EPUB, at full source resolution. There is no quality-destroying re-encode: a scanned page looks exactly as sharp as it did in the archive.

Will the page order be correct?

Yes, as long as the pages are numbered sequentially inside the archive (the normal case: 001.jpg, 002.jpg, and so on). Pages are ordered by their file names, which is exactly how comic readers sort them. If a comic was packaged with inconsistent names, re-number the pages before converting.

A note on quality and text

Since comics are page images, the resulting PDF or EPUB is image-based - there is no selectable or searchable text, and pages do not reflow the way a novel does. That is expected and desirable: it keeps the artwork and hand lettering exactly as drawn. For the crispest result on high-resolution screens, always start from the highest-quality CBR or CBZ you have.

Is it safe to convert comics online?

With most converters, your files sit on a server for hours or longer. PrivConvert is built differently:

  • Files are processed entirely in server memory (RAM)
  • Nothing is written to disk at any point
  • Your comic is deleted from memory the instant the converted file is sent back
  • All transfers use HTTPS encryption
  • No account, no tracking, no file storage
