A drawn signature is not a digital signature

This adds a visible signature image to a page — you draw it or upload one, and it is composited into the document. That is what is needed for the overwhelming majority of everyday paperwork: rental agreements, permission slips, delivery confirmations, internal approvals.

It is not a cryptographic digital signature, and the difference is worth understanding because the two are often conflated.

The two kinds

An electronic signature is a mark indicating intent to agree. A drawn signature, a typed name, a clicked "I accept" — all qualify, and under the US ESIGN Act and the EU's eIDAS regulation they are generally legally binding for ordinary contracts.

A digital signature is a cryptographic operation using a certificate from a recognised authority. It binds the signature to the document's exact bytes, so a viewer can verify both who signed and that not one character has changed since. It requires a certificate you obtain and control, which is why no web page can produce one for you.

Which you need

For everyday agreements, a visible signature is normal and accepted. For documents where a specific standard is mandated — certain court filings, some government submissions, regulated financial and medical records, most public procurement in the EU — a qualified digital signature may be legally required, and an image of your handwriting will be rejected.

If you are unsure, the requirement is usually stated by whoever is asking for the document. When it is not mentioned, an electronic signature is what is expected.

Your document and your signature image are processed in memory and discarded when your download is ready — worth noting, since a signature image is a reusable credential and not something to leave on someone's server.
