What AES-256 on a PDF does, and what it does not

This applies real encryption — the modern PDF revision 6 scheme with AES-256, not the "permissions" flags that older tools set. The distinction matters: a permissions-only PDF is fully readable and merely asks viewers politely not to allow printing, which any viewer can decline to honour. An encrypted PDF's content is genuinely unreadable without the password.

The password is the whole security model

AES-256 is not going to be broken. Your password is, if it is guessable — offline cracking tools throw wordlists at a PDF at high speed, and there is no rate limiting to stop them because the attacker has the file. A memorable phrase of several words beats a short complicated one.

Sending it matters as much

Emailing the encrypted PDF and then emailing the password puts both in the same inbox, which is the same inbox an attacker would compromise. Send the password through a different channel entirely — a message, a call, a password manager's sharing feature.

Encryption is not redaction

An encrypted PDF still contains everything it contained, including text you merely covered with a black rectangle in an editor. Anyone with the password can select and copy that text straight out. If the goal is to remove information rather than restrict who opens the document, that is redaction, and it is a different operation.

Your file and your password are processed in an isolated, in-memory environment. Neither is written to disk, logged, or retained after your download.
