What is a .priv file?

The .priv format is an encrypted container designed for privacy. It uses AES-256-GCM encryption, automatically strips metadata from your files, and hides filenames inside the encrypted payload.

What is a .priv file?
A .priv file is an encrypted container that holds one or more files protected with AES-256-GCM encryption. Unlike password-protected ZIPs, .priv also encrypts filenames and automatically strips metadata before encryption.
Are my files uploaded to your server?
No. All encryption happens in your browser using the Web Crypto API. Your files and password never leave your device. Our server only delivers the web page.
What happens if I forget the password?
There is no way to recover a lost password. We never see or store your password, so we cannot reset it. Make sure to keep your password safe.
Is there a file size limit?
The tool works with files up to approximately 500 MB total. Since everything runs in your browser's memory, very large files may be slower on devices with limited RAM.
What does the expiry date do?
If you set an expiry date, the .priv file will refuse to decrypt after that date. This is useful for time-sensitive documents. The expiry is checked client-side when someone tries to open the file.
How do I open a .priv file?
Use our Open .priv File tool at /tools/priv-decrypt/. Drop the file, enter the password, and download your original files. It also runs entirely in the browser.
Is the .priv format open source?

Can I use .priv from the command line?
Yes. We have a CLI tool for Linux and macOS. Install it with: curl -sL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/toprivHQ/priv-format/main/priv -o /usr/local/bin/priv && chmod +x /usr/local/bin/priv && pip install cryptography. Then use 'priv encrypt' and 'priv decrypt' commands. Files are fully compatible with this web tool.
How is this different from a password-protected ZIP?
ZIP encryption leaves filenames visible and preserves metadata like GPS coordinates in photos. The .priv format encrypts everything including filenames, strips metadata automatically, and supports expiry dates.
