Why the output is an encrypted PDF rather than a locked DOCX
This converts your Word document to PDF and encrypts that with AES-256. You
get a password-protected PDF, not a password-protected .docx, and
that is a deliberate design choice worth explaining.
The reasoning
Office document encryption is a Microsoft-specific scheme whose behaviour varies across Office versions, LibreOffice, Google Docs, macOS Preview and mobile viewers. A file that opens correctly in one may fail or silently drop protection in another. PDF encryption is a published part of the PDF specification and is implemented consistently by every reader in existence.
So the trade is deliberate: you lose editability, and you gain a file that reliably requires the password everywhere, and that renders identically for the recipient regardless of what they open it with — which is usually what people protecting a document actually want.
When this is the wrong tool
If the recipient needs to edit the document, this is not what you want. Send the DOCX through a channel with access control — a shared drive with permissions, or an encrypted transfer service — rather than relying on document-level passwords, which are weak in Office formats and awkward to manage.
Formatting
Conversion is done with LibreOffice. Standard documents come through faithfully; the things that occasionally shift are unusual fonts not installed on the server, complex text boxes and heavily customised numbering. Check the result before you send it if the layout is important.
