How to Convert RAR Files to ZIP Online (No Software Needed)
You downloaded a file and it ends in .rar. You double-click it and nothing happens. Windows does not know what to do with it, and you do not want to install WinRAR just to open one file.
The easiest solution: convert the RAR to ZIP online and open it with your built-in file manager.
Why RAR files do not open on most computers
RAR is a proprietary compression format created by Eugene Roshal. Unlike ZIP, which every operating system supports natively, RAR requires third-party software to open:
- Windows - needs WinRAR (paid) or 7-Zip (free)
- macOS - needs The Unarchiver or Keka
- Linux - needs the unrar package
- Mobile - needs a file manager app with RAR support
If you just need the files inside and do not want to install anything, converting to ZIP is the fastest path.
How to convert RAR to ZIP in 3 steps
- Go to PrivConvert's RAR to ZIP converter
- Upload your RAR file - drag and drop or click to browse. Files up to 250 MB are supported.
- Download the ZIP - conversion takes a few seconds. The output is a standard ZIP file that opens on any device.
No sign-up required. No software to install. Your file is processed in memory and deleted the moment your download is ready.
What happens during conversion?
The converter extracts every file and folder from the RAR archive, validates them for safety (blocking executables, checking for path traversal attacks, and enforcing size limits to prevent zip bombs), then repackages everything into a standard ZIP archive with DEFLATE compression.
The full directory structure is preserved. If your RAR has folders inside folders, the ZIP will have the same structure.
Is it safe to convert files online?
It depends on the service. Most online converters store your files on their servers - sometimes for hours, sometimes indefinitely. PrivConvert is different:
- Files are processed entirely in server memory (RAM)
- Nothing is written to disk at any point
- Your file is deleted from memory the instant the converted ZIP is sent back to you
- All transfers use HTTPS encryption
- No account, no tracking, no analytics

What if I need to go the other way?
Converting ZIP to RAR is not possible with free tools because RAR creation is proprietary and requires a paid license. However, if you need better compression than ZIP, consider converting ZIP to 7Z - it is open source and typically compresses better than RAR.
