What a watermark does and does not protect

A visible watermark deters casual reuse. Someone who would have dragged your image into a deck will think twice when your name is across it, and if the image does travel, the mark travels with it and functions as attribution.

It is not copy protection. Anyone determined can crop it, clone it out, or run an inpainting model over it in seconds. The realistic goal is to raise the effort above what a casual taker will spend, and to make provenance visible when the image is shared.

Placement is the whole decision

A mark in a corner is easily cropped, but a mark across the centre ruins the image for the people you want looking at it. The usual compromise is semi-transparent, positioned over the subject rather than over background, and large enough that removing it damages something you would notice. For contact sheets and proofs, tiled across the whole frame is standard, because those images are meant to be unusable until purchased.

Keep an unwatermarked original

Watermarking here produces a new image; it does not alter the file you uploaded. But once you have distributed the watermarked version, that is the version in circulation — so archive the clean master before you publish. There is no way to recover the pixels underneath a mark that has been flattened into the image.

Unlike most tools in this section, watermarking runs on our servers, because it composites the image. It is processed in an isolated, in-memory environment, never written to disk, and discarded as soon as your download is ready.
