A .lit file is a Microsoft Reader book, and Microsoft Reader is gone. The software launched in 2000 as Microsoft’s answer to the early eBook market, shipped on Pocket PC and Windows, and was retired in 2012 — the store closed, the desktop reader stopped being distributed, and the format stopped being supported by anything. What is left is a lot of legitimately purchased libraries in a container nothing will open. Technically a .lit is a close relative of Microsoft’s CHM help format: an ITOLITLS container holding compressed HTML, with the text squeezed using LZX and the structure held in internal directory streams. That is why renaming the extension achieves nothing and why a plain unzip tool cannot open it — it is not a zip. The conversion parses the real container, pulls out the HTML and the book’s structure, and rebuilds it as a proper EPUB package with a table of contents, so chapters stay chapters instead of collapsing into one long block of text.

Tips for best results
- DRM-protected .lit files cannot be converted, here or anywhere else. Microsoft Reader sold books in three levels: Sealed, Inscribed and Owner Exclusive. The last of these is genuinely encrypted and tied to an activated copy of a reader that no longer exists, so if a file was bought under that scheme the conversion will fail. That is a limit of the file, not of the tool, and the error message will say so rather than handing you an empty book.
- Structure survives better than styling. The chapter breaks and table of contents come across, but the visual design of a book laid out for a 2003 handheld screen is not worth preserving — your reader will reflow the text to your own font and size, which is almost always an improvement.
- Embedded images come through into the EPUB. If a .lit converts to a suspiciously small EPUB, the original was probably text-only rather than something having been dropped.
- If you want the text and nothing else, convert to TXT instead. It is the fastest way to confirm what a file actually contains before deciding what to do with it.
