About Converting LRF to EPUB
LRF is Sony’s BBeB format — Broad Band eBook — the format used by the Sony Librié and the early Sony Reader line from 2004 onwards. Sony itself moved to EPUB around 2010 and shut its Reader Store in 2014, which leaves .lrf as a format abandoned by the company that invented it. If you still have a Sony Reader library, EPUB is where it needs to go: it is the format Sony switched to, and it is what every current reader and phone app expects.
BBeB is not a wrapper around HTML like most eBook formats. It is a binary format with its own tag-based object model, where text, style and layout are encoded as numbered objects with compressed streams — a design closer to a page-description language than to a web page. That is why generic tools cannot read it and why converting requires a parser built specifically for BBeB. The conversion reads that object graph, recovers the text flow and structure, and writes a standard EPUB with a working table of contents.
Common use cases
- Moving a Sony Reader or Librié library onto a Kindle, Kobo, tablet or phone
- Rescuing books bought from the Sony Reader Store before it closed in 2014
- Reading old .lrf files on a modern device with no Sony software available
- Standardising a library that is split between .lrf and EPUB
- Verifying that files off an old Sony device are still readable
Tips for best results
- LRF conversion is unusually reliable because BBeB was never widely DRM-protected in the way Microsoft Reader was. Most .lrf files you are likely to have will convert cleanly.
- Layout was designed for a 6-inch e-ink screen at a fixed size, so do not try to preserve it. EPUB reflows to your device and your font size, which is the point of moving.
- Some .lrf files carry the book’s metadata — title and author — in the BBeB header. Where it is present it is carried into the EPUB, so the book should appear correctly in your library rather than as Unknown.
- If a file will not convert, check whether it is actually .lrx rather than .lrf. LRX is the DRM-protected variant and cannot be converted.
