- Transparency is preserved. This is the main reason to pick WebP over JPG when your PNG has an alpha channel.
- Quality defaults to 85 and accepts 1 to 100. Around 85 the result is visually indistinguishable from the original for photographic content.
- Flat interface colours and sharp text are the first things to show artefacts if you push quality below roughly 60 — screenshots of text deserve a higher setting than photos.
- For very simple graphics with only a handful of flat colours, an optimised PNG is occasionally still the smaller file. It costs nothing to compare both.
- Every current browser reads WebP, including Safari since version 14, so a fallback is rarely needed any more.
