Microsoft Publisher reaches end of life on 1 October 2026. After that date Microsoft 365 subscribers can no longer install Publisher or open and edit .pub files in it. Microsoft’s own advice is to convert to PDF or Word before the deadline. The catch is what it gives you to do that with: Publisher can Save As Word, but one file at a time and only while Publisher still runs, and the official bulk tool — a PowerShell script named Convert-PubFileToPDF.ps1 — produces PDF only. Editable one at a time, or a whole folder frozen as PDF. Nothing in between.

Choose Publisher to PDF when the file is finished and you only need to view, share or print it: PDF reproduces the Publisher layout faithfully and is the right choice for archiving. Choose Word, here, when you still need to change the text, because a PDF is not meaningfully editable. Many organisations facing the deadline do both: PDF as the faithful archive copy, Word as the working copy.
