Tips for best results
- Quality defaults to 60, which on AVIF’s scale is a visually high setting rather than an aggressive one. It does not correspond to 60 in JPEG terms.
- Convert from the highest-quality JPEG available. Each lossy encode compounds on the last, so a heavily compressed source limits how good the AVIF can be.
- AVIF is particularly good with smooth gradients, so photographs with skies or soft backgrounds often improve visibly compared with the JPEG original at the same file size.
- Serve AVIF through a picture element with a WebP or JPEG fallback if you need to support browsers older than Safari 16.
- Encoding takes longer than WebP because AV1 is a more demanding codec. For assets served thousands of times, the one-off cost is easily justified.
