About Converting PNG to AVIF

AVIF applies the AV1 video codec to still images, and the result is currently the most efficient widely-supported image format on the web. For the same perceived quality it typically produces a noticeably smaller file than WebP, which in turn beats JPEG. Crucially for PNG sources, it also carries a full alpha channel, so transparency survives the conversion intact.

Quality defaults to 60 here, and that number deserves a word of explanation because it looks alarming next to JPEG. AVIF’s quality scale is not JPEG’s: 60 in AVIF corresponds to a visually high-quality result, not a heavily degraded one. You can raise it toward 100 for near-transparent fidelity or lower it when file size matters more than fine detail.

Common use cases

  • Squeezing the last bytes out of a hero image or above-the-fold graphic
  • Getting a further reduction on a site that already migrated its images to WebP
  • Serving transparent logos and overlays at the smallest size currently achievable
  • Reducing bandwidth costs on an image-heavy site or a high-traffic landing page
  • Improving load times on mobile connections where every kilobyte is felt

Tips for best results

  • Transparency is preserved, so transparent PNGs convert without picking up a background.
  • The default quality of 60 is already visually high on AVIF’s scale. Treat it as a starting point rather than a compromise.
  • Browser support covers current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16 and later. Serve AVIF through a picture element with a WebP or PNG fallback if you need to support older clients.
  • AVIF encoding is computationally heavier than WebP, so conversion of a very large image takes noticeably longer. The smaller output is usually worth the wait for assets you serve repeatedly.
  • AVIF handles smooth gradients unusually well, which makes it a strong choice for the soft background washes that often band badly in other formats.

How to Convert PNG to AVIF Online

Converting PNG to AVIF with PrivConvert takes three quick steps and no software to install. What you gain with AVIF: best-in-class compression efficiency.

1
Upload your PNG file

Drag and drop your file into the upload area, click to browse your device, or paste a URL to a file hosted online. You can upload files up to 250 MB and batch convert up to 20 files at once.

2
Automatic conversion

Once uploaded, the conversion from PNG to AVIF starts automatically. The process runs entirely in an isolated environment - your data never leaves the secure pipeline.

3
Download your AVIF file

Your converted file is ready instantly. Click the download button to save it to your device. The file is deleted from memory immediately after download.

A more private way to convert PNG files

Plenty of sites convert PNG files. Very few promise never to keep them — PrivConvert does, and backs it up with how the service is built.

Nothing is stored

We never keep a copy. Once your AVIF is delivered, both the original and the result are gone — there is nothing left to leak or misuse.

Isolated sandbox

Every conversion runs in its own locked-down process with no network access, so files can never leak or interfere with one another.

No human ever sees it

Your files are handled entirely by automated code. No staff, partner or AI model ever reads, stores or trains on your data.

Zero data retention

Files are processed in volatile memory (RAM) and purged the instant your download is ready — nothing is ever written to disk, cached or backed up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I convert several PNGs at once?
Yes. Drop up to 20 PNG files into the upload area and each one is converted to AVIF in a single batch.
Why does this take longer than other conversions?
AVIF uses the AV1 codec, which is more computationally demanding than WebP or JPEG. The smaller output is usually worth the extra encoding time for images you serve repeatedly.
Is it private?
Yes. Conversion runs entirely in memory - your images are never written to disk, never stored and are deleted the moment your download is ready.
How does AVIF compare with WebP?
At equivalent perceived quality AVIF files are generally smaller, often meaningfully so, and AVIF holds up better on smooth gradients. WebP encodes faster and is supported by a slightly wider range of older software, so it remains a sensible fallback.
Is transparency kept?
Yes. AVIF supports a full alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas of your PNG are carried through exactly.
Why is the default quality 60 rather than 85?
AVIF’s quality scale is not the same as JPEG’s. A value of 60 in AVIF already produces a visually high-quality image; using JPEG-style numbers would produce needlessly large files.
Can every browser display AVIF?
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16 or later all display AVIF. For older browsers, use a picture element that offers a WebP or PNG alternative alongside the AVIF source.
