About Converting PNG to GIF
GIF is a far more constrained format than PNG, and understanding the two limits it imposes explains everything about this conversion. First, a GIF frame can contain at most 256 distinct colours. Second, GIF has no alpha channel — it can mark exactly one palette entry as fully transparent, and that is the entirety of its transparency support.
This converter handles both constraints deliberately rather than letting them corrupt your image. It builds an adaptive 255-colour palette tuned to the actual colours in your PNG, then reserves the final palette slot for transparency. Pixels that were more than half transparent become fully transparent; the rest are drawn normally. Without that reserved slot, a standard palette conversion silently discards the alpha channel and paints every transparent area black, which is how a logo PNG ends up as a black rectangle on other converters.
Common use cases
- Meeting a hard GIF-only requirement in older forum software, wikis or content systems
- Producing an image for legacy email templates or embedded devices that predate PNG support
- Exporting small flat-colour graphics, diagrams or icons where 256 colours is more than enough
- Feeding a piece of older software or hardware whose image importer only recognises GIF
Tips for best results
- Transparency is preserved, but only as fully on or fully off. Soft drop shadows and anti-aliased edges are decided at the 50 percent mark, so smooth edges become hard ones.
- Photographs and smooth gradients will show visible banding, because 255 colours cannot represent a continuous sky or skin tone. WebP or the original PNG is the better choice for that content.
- Flat illustrations, screenshots of interfaces, logos and line diagrams usually convert with no visible difference at all — they rarely use more than 255 colours to begin with.
- The output is a single still frame. Producing an animation needs a sequence of source frames, which this tool does not take.
- A GIF is frequently larger than the PNG it came from. GIF is a 1987 format and its compression has not aged well; convert because something requires GIF, not to save space.

Why convert PNG to GIF with PrivConvert?
PrivConvert turns your PNG into GIF without ever storing, logging or sharing it. Here is what that looks like in practice:
We never keep a copy. Once your GIF is delivered, both the original and the result are gone — there is nothing left to leak or misuse.
Every conversion runs in its own locked-down process with no network access, so files can never leak or interfere with one another.
Your files are handled entirely by automated code. No staff, partner or AI model ever reads, stores or trains on your data.
Files are processed in volatile memory (RAM) and purged the instant your download is ready — nothing is ever written to disk, cached or backed up.
