The fast format that nothing else reads

Excel’s binary workbook exists for one reason: speed. The same data that takes a large .xlsx seconds to parse loads from an .xlsb almost instantly, which is why heavy financial models, large SAP ALV exports and automated reporting jobs keep producing it. The trade-off is that almost nothing outside desktop Excel can open one - BI tools, import pipelines, Google Sheets and most programming libraries all expect the XML-based .xlsx.

This tool reads the binary records and writes a standard workbook: sheets, cell values, number formats and Unicode text carried across, so the file opens anywhere. If what you actually need is the raw data, XLSB to CSV goes straight to text in one step.

A workbook this format usually carries is worth protecting

Files only end up as .xlsb when they are big and they matter: consolidated financials, payroll models, full-year ledgers, ERP exports. That is not the kind of file to upload to a converter that stores uploads on disk under a retention policy. Here the conversion runs entirely in memory inside a no-network sandbox, and the moment your download is delivered the workbook is gone - never written to disk, never logged, never retained.

One side effect works in your favour: since a plain .xlsx cannot carry VBA, any macros in the binary workbook are dropped by the conversion, so the file you share onward cannot execute anything.

Working with SAP or CRM exports?

The SAP exports guide maps every file that comes out of ALV grids, spool requests and legacy systems to the right converter, and the CRM & ERP overview does the same across systems. For scheduled exports, this conversion is on the API at /api/convert/xlsb-to-xlsx, including async jobs with signed webhooks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is an .xlsb file?
An Excel Binary Workbook. It holds the same sheets, formulas and formatting as a regular .xlsx, but stores them as binary records instead of XML, which makes big workbooks smaller and much faster for Excel to open and save. Finance teams and SAP exports use it heavily for exactly that reason.
Why convert it to .xlsx at all?
Compatibility. Most tools outside Excel itself - import scripts, BI connectors, Google Sheets, web viewers, many Python and JavaScript libraries - read .xlsx but not .xlsb. Converting gives you a file every spreadsheet tool understands, with values, formulas and sheet structure carried over.
Will Hebrew, Arabic or Chinese text survive the conversion?
Yes. The binary format stores all text as Unicode, and the conversion carries it across as Unicode. We verify this with a test workbook containing Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese and accented European text on every release.
Do macros come along?
No. An .xlsb can embed VBA macros, and a plain .xlsx cannot hold them, so any macro code is dropped by the format change itself. For converting the data this is usually exactly what you want: the result is a workbook that cannot execute anything.
Do you keep the file?
No. The conversion runs in memory inside a sandboxed process with no network access, on a server with swap disabled. The workbook is never written to disk, never logged and never retained.
