From Excel’s binary format straight to data

The .xlsb binary workbook is what SAP ALV exports and heavy finance models produce when file size and load time matter. It is excellent inside desktop Excel and opaque everywhere else - most import tools, scripts and services cannot read it at all. When the goal is simply to get the rows out, this converts the active sheet to a clean UTF-8 CSV: values as stored, formulas replaced by their results, text in any language intact.

Need the workbook structure rather than raw rows? XLSB to XLSX keeps sheets and formatting. Need the data queryable? Chain the CSV through CSV to SQLite or CSV to SQL.

Processed like the financial file it probably is

Workbooks saved as .xlsb tend to be ledgers, payroll runs and consolidated reports - files that should never sit on a converter’s disk. This conversion runs entirely in memory inside a no-network sandbox on a server with swap disabled; the file is deleted the moment your download is delivered, and nothing about its contents is logged.

Converting exports on a schedule? The same conversion runs on the API at /api/convert/xlsb-to-csv, with async jobs and signed webhooks. The SAP exports guide covers where these files come from and what else you can do with them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which sheet ends up in the CSV?
The workbook’s active sheet, which for exports is almost always the only sheet. If your .xlsb has several sheets you need separately, convert to .xlsx first with XLSB to XLSX and export each sheet from there.
Will Excel open the CSV with Hebrew or Chinese intact?
Yes. The CSV is written as UTF-8, so Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese and accented European text from the workbook stays correct. We test this with a multilingual workbook on every release.
What happens to formulas?
You get their current values. CSV is plain text, so formulas cannot survive as formulas; each cell is exported as the result stored in the workbook.
Why not just open the .xlsb in Excel and save as CSV?
If you have desktop Excel handy, that works. This tool is for everyone who does not: Mac users on Numbers, Linux users, scripts and pipelines, or anyone handed an .xlsb by SAP or a finance system who just needs the data out of it.
Do you keep the file?
No. The conversion runs in memory inside a sandboxed process with no network access. The workbook is never written to disk, never logged and never retained.
