DjVu solved a real problem: in an era when a scanned book as PDF weighed hundreds of megabytes, DjVu’s layered compression produced the same pages at a tenth the size. Digital libraries, university archives and scanning projects adopted it en masse - which is why so many digitised books, old papers and technical manuals still exist only as .djvu. The viewers died; the files did not.
This renders each page with the reference DjVu engine and writes a PDF that opens everywhere - phone, tablet, e-reader, print dialog. Afterwards, the usual PDF tools apply: Compress PDF if the result is heavy, Split PDF to pull out a chapter, Merge PDF to combine volumes.
