Frequently Asked Questions

What does inverting actually do?
Each colour value is replaced by its opposite on the 0-255 scale, so 0 becomes 255 and 40 becomes 215. Black turns white, white turns black, and every hue is replaced by its complement - the same effect as a photographic negative.
Does inverting twice restore the original?
Yes, mathematically it does: inversion is its own opposite, so applying it twice returns every pixel to its starting value. The only caveat is that the file is re-encoded each time, which is harmless here because the output is lossless PNG.
What happens to transparent areas?
The alpha channel is left alone. Only the colour channels are inverted, so a logo with a transparent background keeps that background transparent instead of turning it into a solid block.
What is this useful for?
The practical cases are reading a scanned film negative as a positive image, converting dark-background diagrams and screenshots into something that prints without flooding the page with ink, and checking whether a design still holds up when its tonal values are reversed.
Is my image kept private?
Yes. Inversion happens in memory inside an isolated process. Your image is never written to disk and is discarded as soon as your download is ready.
